In the center of a radially symmetrical ornament is a relief of Medusa’s head. The Gorgoneion (Ancient Greek: Γοργόνειον) is an apotropaic representation of the head of the Gorgon Medusa (Ancient Greek: Μέδουσα — "guardianship, protectress").

Such depictions were widespread in ancient art, serving primarily as protective amulets. Throughout antiquity, the style of depicting Medusa's head evolved: in the Archaic period, it appeared as a grotesque monster mask, whereas by the Hellenistic period, it transformed into a feminine face framed by serpentine hair. Medusa’s head belonged to Athena, who wore it on her aegis or shield. According to different versions of the myth, Athena either helped Perseus defeat Medusa, defeated her herself, or was responsible for transforming Medusa into a monster in the first place.
